Got no love for the wretched poor man
He's been stealing every little thing he can
Poor man he can't read, no he can't write
Don't know who to blame or who to fight
Got no love for the wicked rich man
He's been stealing every little thing he can
Right man hold the world inside his hand
Counterfeit coins keep 'em buying all they can
Don't you come around or I'll shoot you down
Rich or poor not a one of you can stand your ground
Don't you come around I'm gonna shoot you down
Rich or poor ain't a one of you can wear that crown

Bottles

When I was young
Used to play with them devils
Got burned once
Got scores to settle
Shake my hand and I'll sell my soul
I don't need it, I don't need it
I can pay every debt I owe
I believe it, I believe it
The night is young
Try to read their faces
Call their bluff
Drop five aces
Shake my hand and I'll sell my soul
I don't need it, I don't need it
I can pay every debt I owe
I believe it, I believe it
Washout at the end of the road
And I seen it, yeah I seen it
Half acre of hell for sale
And I need it, I need it

Shoot 'em Dogs Road

You boys ain't out of the smoke just yet
That barn went up like a cigarette
Frontier town under a blistered sky
Highway graveyards where good men lie
Some ranch hand tougher than cement
Buck fifty if he's soaking wet
Flash your teeth through the chain link fence
Barman go set them up again
Did you see him dust that kid out front?
That dirty dog, he don't hunt
Vultures will pick the body clean
You're a blind man now, if you know what I mean
Lawman had said the trail went cold
Bloodhounds can't smell the scent of gold
Lawman had said the trail got old
Go on and cry yourself back home
Boom towns will always come and go
Just like strays down on Shoot 'em Dogs Road

Night Work
05:03
|
|||
These dirty hands, always pushing heavy weight
They'll swing a hammer, working 'till the day I break
I'm begging god, put me on a path to fame
Through Central Park, walking over fallen graves
When cash is king, living in a land of slaves
These dirty hands, grabbing everything they take
Running on the edge of the line

Black Sands

You can't fix a house
While it's burning down
And she was lighting up
But who will put her out?
So get to talking son
Tell me what I want to hear
This ain't your father's land
That much is clear
There's a pit house on
The island in the lake
Send your family there
And come guard the gate
It's a ticking clock
No way out of this mess
If my time do come
I'll cash in I guess
Would you meet it face to face?
Would you squirm in its embrace?
If it sets it would you see it through?
When the time comes will you know what to do?
I am the iron, tempered by the wind
I was once the anvil, now I leave the dents

This barn is packed tonight
Under arena lights
There's something in the air
You got a bottle to share?
I hear their stomping feet
I change beneath the seats
And in the dark I wait
My taped hands that shake
You've done this all before
Just need to win one more
And then the curtain's drawn
"OK son, you're on"
Who'll be the first one to break?
Just knock him out of the way
Step inside the ropes
Gramercy Gym on my coat
"Touch gloves," he says
My eyes are colder than his
Throw a left down the pipe
A right hook ends the night
And man the crowd did road
When that son bitch hit the floor
Black tie, white shirt goning to count to ten
Corner man throw that towel in

Carnival Glass
05:44
|
|||
A fistful of dollars for a simple trick
Listen to me Pa, they're rolling over quick
Scarecrow and the yellow moon around
Carnival sitting on the edge of town
Lady luck going off to tempt her fate
Diamond dancers who patiently await
Put your money down on the ancients' grave
Psychic smoke as you fade away
I won't pray to a body that floats
Won't save a soul if the money don't flow
Old growth been wearing out its stay
Sawmill, planers will tear it all away
Smokestack stuck on a flatbed truck
Tonnes of chains to tie it up
The mirror pond is a blackened looking glass
Underneath it all the seer's face is trapped
Such a noble day for a sacrifice
With no return from the ever afterlife
The whole mountain side is being blasted out
Natives warned them all not to build the route
Water's moving even when it's clear
Now the bodies just go and disappear
Carnival is rolling out of town
Light a smoke up, the driver's looking down
Hear the temptress call out his name
Another rose in hell, another water grave

Union Made
05:52
|
|||
I hear the train, coming down the tracks
Like a feral dog, in search of scraps
I did whatever I had to do
I drank my money just to see it through
A union cheque between my hands
A porcelain doll and abandoned plans
I pack my bags, going to leave this town
And hop that train to where I can't be found
The timber's thick for this time of year
And I know it's full of white tail deer
A gambler's game and I got no plans
Find the sea so I can cleanse my hands
And all that's left will age and rust
Like a dying leaf left to burn in the sun
I find that spark, I hope she stays
I play that hand, I hope it pays
His daddy came up to the door
Those grand kids of his, he ain't seen before
Said "It's been a while, and I wan to know,
Got two tickets here, to the big top show."
He stood his ground, didn't waste his breath
He closed that door and put hell to rest
Through thick and thin I will take the blame
Find the sea and drown my shame

Looming Tower
07:32
|
|||
The heavy hand is held to the ear
Say what you want, it's not what they hear
The nights get longer, another wasted year
Everything you see is not what it appears
The long haul trucks are headed to the North
The people were mad but their voices ignored
Now I've seen bad but nothing like this before
A looming tower headed straight to shore
When the sun goes down
Don't you know trouble's coming around?
There's a divide between the simple and smart
It's easy to rule when you lead in the dark
The wolves got the books and they tore them apart
There's blood in the water for them circling sharks
Through the bitter cold money lights the way
Now two dead men lie in Burn's Lake
The hoards are massing just outside our gates
From their towers in the sky I hope they're safe
Who is left to save if this train's a runaway?
